Frequently Asked Questions

HOW WILL WE GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROPERTY?

We make preparing for your trip simple. Unlike many properties that send you extensive instructions and leave you with a large binder that you’re expected to read through once you’re there, once booked, you will be sent your own personal link for our comprehensive DIGITAL guide. This guide is full of information about the property, the area, where to eat, what to bring, what to do for fun, and tips to have the best time! It has an excellent search feature so you’re not scrolling (flipping!) through pages and pages to find one piece of information.

For now, here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

What is your cancellation policy?

You will be asked to pay 30% as your deposit when you book. If you need to change your plans, you will have 90 days prior to arrival to cancel. It is always wise to have travel insurance which can often be obtained simply by using your credit card for payment!

Where are the properties located?

Casa del Sol is in the quaint village of Puerto Morelos, approximately 20 minutes south of the Cancun airport. The home is a 10–12-minute walk to the town square by road or by beach.

Casa Perros Afortunados is also in Puerto Morelos and is situated perfectly to access all parts of town. It is less than a five minute walk to the beach, the town square, and almost all restaurants.

Vive El Sueño is located in Playa del Carmen, about 45 minutes from the airport in Cancun. The condo is an eight-minute drive into downtown Playa.

Do I need to rent a car?

If you plan to spend the majority of your vacation in Puerto Morelos, you do not need a car. Both Casa del Sol and Casa Perros are within walking distance of all restaurants and stores in town. The cab fare to/from town is about $200 pesos. There is a contact link we provide for a local cab we know and who is reliable. Day trips to Tulum, Playa, etc. can be arranged through a transportation service. If you plan to travel extensively while you are there, it would be a good idea to have your own vehicle.

If you are staying at Vive El Sueño and will likely spend most of your time enjoying the onsite amenities, you can easily make use of cabs ($12USD approx.) for four people to cab into town and use tour companies to visit the region. Having a vehicle is a great way to see the area freely however, and is advised if you’d like to explore.

The only rental company we endorse is Sixt. You can use their MX site to book. Their prices are good, they are reliable and they are honest!

How do I get to the property from the airport?

If you are not renting a car, there are many transportation services that are available. We have a local company we like to use. They are reliable, their cars are kept in excellent condition, and they know all three of our properties well. Some of our guests also use Canada Transfers. We have had very good feedback on them – clean vans, great drivers, reliable and reasonable. If you use this link, you can get to their site.

Set up transportation prior to travel. Many times, it is impossible to secure transportation after you have arrived unless it is a taxi and then you may ot be sure of what you're getting or whether the price is fair. It’s quick and easy to set up round trip transportation with Eduardo, our personal favourite, or Canada Transfers before you head to Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in time is 3pm and check-out time is 11am. There might be an occasion that these times are flexible, but most often we must stick with these times. The houses are very busy and typically there is a group before you and a group after you. If you arrive a little early, we can find a safe spot to store your bags and you can head to town for a cold drink or snack if you’re at Casa del Sol or Casa Perros Afortunados, or make full use of all the amenities on the condo property – pool, beach, restaurants etc. – at Vive El Sueño.

Upon departure, if your plane does not leave until later in the afternoon, we can store your bags as you depart the property at 11:00, and you can head into town for lunch or shopping in Puerto Morelos. At Vive El Sueño, the concierge can hold your luggage, and you can continue enjoying the resort amenities. We try our hardest to have a smooth check-in/check-out, and we are grateful for everyone’s flexibility and cooperation!

Do the owners live on-site?

No, we live in Ontario, Canada, but we do have a great staff to take care of your every need.

Casa del Sol: Upon arrival, Roberto, our property manager, will greet you and provide you information about the house. He will also help you put your personal code into the keyless entry lock. Roberto will check on you through your stay. If you need him at any time, you can just send him a message on WhatsApp and he’ll be there to assist. Adrian, Enrique and Alex, our caretakers, will clean the pool, take chairs to the beach, help unload groceries, etc. If you’re staying more than five days, Rosy will do light cleaning once a week while you are there and also takes care of the final cleaning.

Casa Perros Afortunados: We’re lucky to have Roberto also manage this property, along with Enrique who takes care of the grounds and the plunge pool. Roberto will meet you at the house and show you around. If you need him at any time, you can just send him a message on WhatsApp and he’ll be there to assist. If you’re staying more than five days, Rosy will do light cleaning once a week while you are there and also takes care of the final cleaning.

Vive El Sueño: The condo allows for self-check-in and you will receive your key code prior to arrival. If you need anything during your stay, Andrés is available by WhatsApp to respond. The resort is yours to use during your stay; you only have to book tennis, pickleball, and the gym with the Concierge, to enjoy the amenities.

Do all the properties have wi-fi?

Yes, all three homes have high speed wireless internet.

Do you have baby gear?

We have a highchair, pack-n-play, and stroller for your use at Casa del Sol & Casa Perros Afortunados. At Vive El Sueño we have a booster chair, pack-n-play, and stroller for your use.

How do we get groceries?

Casa del Sol & Casa Perros Afortunados: There is a wonderful, well-stocked Selecto grocery store in town. Walking distance from Casa Perros and a bike ride from Casa Del Sol. Both houses have bikes! There are also two grocery stores on the highway, Chedraui and Super Aki. Chedraui has a great selection of wine, beer, and liquor. We also offer a courtesy “starter” shop if you’d like that, so you can start relaxing right away.

Vive El Sueño: There are many grocery stores in and around the area. You will find an excellent selection at Chedraui on Av 45 Sur Esq, C. 3 Sur S N, and there is also Walmart 30 Avenida Norte or Súper Akí Playa del Carmen 1 at Av. 30 Norte and 14 Norte. NOTE: there are no plastic bags provided at the grocery stores. You may find reusable grocery bags under the sink or stove. Please return them when you leave. If you wish, you can also pre-order your groceries and have them delivered for after 4pm. You can also speak with my Property Manager Andrés who can help make this arrangement for a small fee. For small items or if you’ve forgotten anything, there is a mini mart at the front office which is surprisingly well stocked. They open at 9am and close at 5pm with one-hour mid-day closed for lunch.

How many nights is the minimum stay?

Casa Del Sol: Seven nights is usually our minimum during High Season, and we start and end each booking on a Saturday. Off peak (July-October) we accept 5-day bookings, and they can start and end any day.

Casa Perros Afortunados & Vive El Sueño: Three nights is our minimum stay with no check in/check out restrictions.

Do you allow smoking inside the properties?

No, there is NO smoking in our homes. If you smoke outside, we appreciate you properly disposing of your cigarette butts. There is no smoking on the pool loungers.

May we bring a pet to your vacation homes?

Casa Perros Afortunados translates to House of the Lucky Dogs! So, yes, you can bring your pup to the stay. We ask that they remain under 30lbs and that you confirm with us first. No dogs in the pool!

Casa del Sol: No, we love our furry friends, but no pets are permitted in either home or on the grounds.

Vive El Sueño: We are not permitted to welcome any dogs to the complex. These are the rules of the Condo Corporation, and we can not make exceptions.

Do you have someone that could cook for us?

There are several options for having a cook at each property. This information will be made available in the guide with links for direct connection to each chef.

What restaurants in town do you recommend?

Casa del Sol & Casa Perros Afortunados: For such a small village, Puerto Morelos has great restaurants! All are very casual and reasonable. We haven’t found any we don’t like, so it’s hard to recommend just a few but our guide has a pretty good list.

Vive El Sueño: The guide contains local suggestions although it barely scratches the surface!

What are the departure instructions?

A day before your departure date you’ll receive an email letting you know about departure. Rest assured we do not expect you to clean the house before you go!

Casa del Sol & Casa Perros Afortunados: We limit our requests to turning off the AC, disposing of any open food, dropping your garbage in the bin, and turning on the dishwasher (at Casa Sol).

Vive El Sueño: We ask you to dispose of all open food, turn down the air conditioning, and leave the parking pass & fan remotes in their holders.

How do I go about booking?

To secure your place in paradise, you can click on the RESERVATIONS option on the page of the property you’d like to visit. There you’ll find a calendar with availability. By choosing your dates you will also see the rate, under which are the taxes. There are no service fees for booking directly! You can still pay by credit card, and you are still protected with the same cancellation policies as most of the platforms. The only difference is in savings!

Do we need to bring beach towels?

No, we supply beach towels.

What else do you supply?

Casa del Sol: We supply toilet paper, hand soap, dishwasher pods, trash bags, a starter roll of paper towels, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, and small bar soap. We offer the option to have shampoo and conditioner for those who do not wish to travel with their own. Some guests leave salt, pepper and other spices but we cannot guarantee what will be available on that front but we do try to stay stocked with foil and saran. The coffee makers do not require filters but you will need to purchase your own coffee and, if you prefer Nespresso, your own original type pods. You do not need to buy water jugs as we have a reverse osmosis system and the filters are changed regularly. Hair dryers are also supplied in each bathroom.

What are some things to do in the area?

Playa and Puerto Morelos are within 20 minutes of each other and so share many of the same attractions. Puerto Morelos has the Little Mexican Cooking School, Crococun Zoo, and The Jungle Spa, which are all big attractions in the area. Xel Ha, XCaret, and XPlore are parks within an easy drive of both homes. There are also many great cenotes within a 20-minute drive of both homes. 5th Ave. shopping in Playa is about 30 minutes away form Puerto Morelos. Layla Guesthouse, in downtown Puerto Morelos, has some great seminars through the week – bird talks, Mayan culture, cenote history, etc. There are also several yoga sessions going on most days.

Playa del Carmen offers a wide array of activities. All of the attractions are easily accessible by vehicle, you can access Cozumel by ferry, all of the restaurants and attractions of the city are available to you, and you are close to Mayan ruins. There is more detail in the guide.

What is the maximum occupancy of your home?

Casa del Sol:  Maximum of 12 adults or children with the rental of the first two floors (5 bedrooms) and up to a maximum of 16 if all three floors are rented (7 bedrooms).

Casa Perros Afortunados: Six people with the option of a seventh on the futon in the media room. If they are children and small then you may be able to manage two on the futon.

Vive El Sueño:  Maximum of 10 adult or children with one or two infants.

Can we have day guests at the house?

No, there are no day guests allowed at either property without prior approval of the owner. This policy is also strictly enforced. You will be asked to vacate the premises if this policy is not followed.

Are there safes in the house?

Yes, the master bedroom in Vive El Sueño has a safe that holds passports, wallets, and money.

There is a large safe in Casa del Sol downstairs that hold laptops, iPads, purses, etc. Casa del Sol has three bedrooms with a safe.

Casa Perros Afortunados has one safe in the media room.

Where do we change currency to pesos?

There is a money exchange booth on the town square in Puerto Morelos where you can easily exchange money. It is recommended that guests not use the ATM machines outdoors. There have been reports at times of cards being compromised. Use the ATMs inside the OXXO convenience stores in town, the ATM at Chedraui, or use the money exchange booth in town. There is also a bank next door to Chedraui that will exchange your money at a very good exchange rate.

In Playa del Carmen there are many exchange booths throughout the city but particularly along 5th Ave.

Do shops and restaurants take credit cards?

Most places in Puerto Morelos and Playa take credit cards, but do not count on using cards everywhere. All the grocery chains will accept most major credit cards. Please note that Chedraui has a $250 credit card limit. If you foresee your grocery bill exceeding $250, you may want to consider bringing an additional credit card or cash to make up the difference.

Are you sure you answered all my questions?

NO! So, if you have any others, be sure to email us! We’d be happy to answer any questions you might have. Again, once booked, you’ll have access to our comprehensive digital guide!
